Niki Perryman and Jame Morrison, both sailors state that the ingredients required for kedging are a good dose of panic, a lot of shouting and some strenuous heave. They mention that a strong anchor is necessary for handling the sailboat, thus some of the necessary techniques of handling the ship are discussed.

Ashley Butler is cruising the U.S. Intercoastal Waterway despite suffering from severe dyslexia. Ashley's self made boat Ziska is an engineless, 38 feet 1903 gaffer. In the summer 1999, Ashley and his friend sailed for Spain with a fog, tide, a sperm whale and engineless boat cruising.
