The emergence of geographical position systems (GPS) has made sailing much easier but it has nonetheless not made older instruments such as the sextant dispensable. The latter and other non-automated equipment are needed in cases of electronic failure which would render the GPS useless.

Sailboat enthusiasts can now reliably forecast the weather through personal computers equipped with receivers for polar-orbiting weather satellite broadcasts. Polar-orbiting satellites are closer to the Earth and therefore provide a better view than geostationary satellites.
