Article Abstract:
Four marine satellite communication systems, namely Magellan's portable World Phone, Nera Telecommunication's World Phone, KVH's Tracphone 25 and O'Gara Satellite System's Boatfone, were compared. Magellan's $3,000 portable World Phone was found to be most suitable for boating.

Boaters leave land, but still want to be able to communicate long distances from the middle of the ocean. Single Sideband Radio (SSB) is the oldest way of communicating for boaters. Another option if INMARSAT-M, a satellite telephone system. Both system are evaluated.
