Ric Munoz learend he was HIV positive after finishing seventh in the 1987 Mission Bay Marathon in San Diego. He has continued to compete in marathons and has remained almost completely free of AIDS-related symptoms, joining a growing group of HIV-positive endurance athletes in the US.

Dolores Cross is the president of Chicago State University, a commuter school of mostly economically and educationally disadvantaged older students. She has improved enrollment and academic achievement with a steady pace, the same way she does her marathon running.
