Trophy-sized mule deer are more difficult to bag than large elk or whitetail deer, because there are no proprietary hunting reserves containing them. Mule deer must be carefully stalked in remote canyons and juniper forests, and they do not respond to calls or rattling.

Black-tailed deer are the most difficult to successfully hunt because they live in the densely-wooded regions of the West Coast. Terrain and weather considerations add to the difficulty. Stillhunting and tree stand hunting techniques are described to aid hunters.
