A sailor shares his personal views on the advantages of buying used boats, many of which have character, history and classic good looks and most importantly, can be purchased at an attractive price. A few suggestions on how to go about looking for and buying an old boat are presented, including advice on doing careful research on the specific model and getting a qualified surveyor to do a purchase survey.

How water ballast works

Movable and fixed water ballast can increase the stability of trailer boats. Movable ballast tanks are usually in the sides of the boat, and fixed ballast tanks are usually in the boat's center. The main disadvantage of water ballast is that it adds a great deal of weight to the boat.
