The US took two of the 1996 Olympic sailing medals. The recruiting program needs to be overhauled so that a better showing will result in the next Olympics in Sydney, Australia in 2000. Some suggestions offered include, more recruiting and support of a bigger pool of non-Olympic-class sailors.

Pros and cons: it's time to simplify the definitions of amateur and professional

Sailors are amateurs if the sport is just a pastime for them. They become professionals when the earn money from sailing. The Brut Sailing Series, which has a $250,000 grand prize, is a prime example of the professional aspect of sailing.
