Tennis instructors frequently encourage their students to "punch" their volley shots, implying a sharp forward motion resulting in the arm straightening completely. Volley shots, in fact, are best accomplished by keeping the elbow bent, and only slightly straightening the arm when hitting the ball. Techniques for improving volleys are detailed.

Tennis players who have trouble with their backhands can still win matches. Building a strong forehand can offset the backhand problem. Other solutions to the problem includes keeping ground strokes deep, sticking to the center, being shifty on returns and getting better at the net.
