Quantitative assessment of pathways for lactate disposal in skeletal muscle fiber types
Article Abstract:
Several unique perfused muscle preparations in the rabbit have been developed for various kinds of fibers and for mixed fibers. Problems are inherent in some methods of preparation of skeletal muscle for study. The preparations made quantitative assessment of all major pathways of lactate disposal by the fiber types at rest possible. The formation of phosphoenolpyruvate appears to occur via reversal of the pyruvate kinase reaction. The findings apply only to mammalian skeletal muscle and may not apply to animals of other classes like reptiles/amphibians

Intra- and extra-cellular lactate shuttles
Article Abstract:
Extra- and intracellular lactate shuttles are discussed in this review article. Clearly lactate plays a key role in distribution of carbohydrate potential energy between muscle cells and other cells. The hypothesis of an intracellular lactate shuttle might lead to new understanding of the interrelationships among glycolytic and oxidative metabolism.
