New fishing reels are considered innovative, but they have limitations that fishermen may not realize. One reel that has a skirted spool reduces the casting distance, while the palming-rim fly-reel can be damaged easily. A third reel lacks directions.

The plugs of summer

Three types of topwater plugs used to hook fish are recommended for summer fishing. Walking, popping and gurgling plugs have all been used for many years, and are most useful for catching larger fish at daybreak or in the evening.
