Splints made of a material called plastizote may be soft enough to avoid harming other sport participants as well as firm enough to protect an injury. The splints are lightweight and may be worn between games, but they may not be appropriate for all types of fractures.

A research project found that people with blood selenium levels of about 103 micrograms per liter had a 60% lower risk of getting cancer or heart disease than those with 60 micrograms. Good sources of selenium include grains, seafood, Brazil nuts and muscle meats.
