Article Abstract:
Boating competitions and accidents have resulted in unnecessary lawsuits. Cases that have been filed were a port-starboard incident, patent violation and accidental deaths resulting from test navigation exercises. Out of court settlements must be encouraged instead of filing lawsuits for such cases.

Several trends have been observed in the sport of sailing. These include the growing popularity of short and simple sail races and an increase of boating information in the Internet. Moreover, environmental and safety regulations concerning water activities are becoming more stringent.
