Medical emergencies in the high seas can be dealt with adequately if a telecommunications system had been prepared beforehand. A single-sideband network installed among boats may save lives during critical conditions. Its use is illustrated by a man with a severe case of appendicitis aboard a sailboat sailing in the Pacific Ocean.
