The explosive first maneuver in the NRHA Reining Pattern 9 is a run-in, sliding stop and backup that sets the stage for good performance. Steps are provided which emphasizes that the key to a pretty turnaround is cadence and the horse must have nice, even footsteps with the addition of speed through a smooth acceleration from a slow to a fast lope within a quarter of a circle while a transition to the next maneuver calls for three things quickly: slow down, change leads and guide the horse in a new direction.
