A 'started-dog' is one that has had it's instincts awakened and then bought under control. Issues concerning the difficulties in finding a universal definition of a 'started-dog' are presented, with reference to the fact that different breeds have variable instincts and levels of trainability.

Hunting dogs should be trained from the age of eight weeks and have the genetic structure to be a good hunter. The training level should not exceed the maturity of the dog in order to properly train it.
