Some of the advantages to using steel in the construction of bicycle frames are it is easily repaired, it costs less than more exotic materials, it has traditional styling and it can be customized. The disadvantages are weight and corrosion. The Columbus EL steel frame is evaluated.

BeYOND Beryllium Fabrications has been developing bicycle frames from beryllium/aluminum metal matrix composite. The frames, which are priced at $1,895, are lighter and feature increased specific strength and stiffness as compared to other tubes.
