Still cruising after 80 years

The life of the 80 year old Jim Melcher an unique cruiser who owns Alert a 33 feet Phil Bolger designed yacht is reviewed. Jim was into cruising right from childhood and he is even now when most sailors at the age of 80 give excuses for giving up ocean voyaging to assume a less-risky sedentary life ashore.

Hans Klaar, the famous cruising trader, began his life on the sea at eight years, when his father bought a Thai cargo junk and set sail for Australia with his family. Klaar purchased a 36-ft plywood catamaran when he was 22 and started his trading voyages.

Bringing goose home

A sailor describes his efforts to bring Goose, a 43-year-old Pearson triton yawl back to the United States. Goose had the same design of Atom, which was extensively modified for offshore cruising during their two circumnavigations.
