Article Abstract:
The construction of the Spallation Neutron Source laboratory poses a great challenge to geotechnical and structural engineering. The $1.3 billion project will be erected at a 110-acre property at the Dept of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory on Oak Ridge, TN. It is expected to be completed in four years and will start in Oct 1999. The facility has five main parts, namely, the ion source, linear accelerator, accelerator ring, laboratories and a target building. All the structures will be 30-ft. underground except for the laboratory.
