A so-called Funny Car can turn in a dramatic performance, accelerating to 290 mph in a quarter of a mile. They can also be extremely dangerous, resulting in triple-layer fire suits for the drivers as well as handy fire extinguishers. John Force is the leading driver in the field.

Over there: Americans invade Le Mans
Article Abstract:
A number of American automobile racing teams participated in the 1996 running of the Le Mans 24-hour endurance race. The winning team was Davy Jones from the US, Manuel Reuter from Germany, and Alexander Wurz from Australia. The winning car was a Joest Racing Porsche.

Racing driver Nobuhiro Tajima achieved the overall title in the 1995 Pikes Peak Hill Climb. The Climb, which has taken place 73 times since 1916, is the second oldest automobile racing event in the US, and one of the most dangerous.
