Suspension forks: the third generation

The latest suspension forks for bicycles are evaluated. The Rock Shox Judy XC line was considered the best in terms of damping, travel and weight. These forks have evolved from minimal damping ability to elastomer materials with sophisticated oil damping systems.

Five models of suspension forks ($225-$390) are tested by MONSTER (Mobile On-Bike Suspension Tester), a special device to measure shock effectiveness. Scott Unishock ($225), an active shock that works on small bumps, is considered the best buy.

Few would argue that the best derailleurs come from Japanese and European manufacturers. However, some US firms are turning out their own products. A brief overview of three US-made derailleurs is presented.
