Tahoe rebirth
Article Abstract:
Efforts are progressing on several fronts to restore an atmosphere of rusticity and elegance to lodgings in the Lake Tahoe region. Early twentieth-century-style resorts were gradually replaced during the 1960s and 1970s with nondescript motels and sterile high-rise casinos. Several of the hotel-casinos, including the Hyatt Regency, are remodeling their suites, casinos and exteriors to reflect the grand tradition of such locations as the Ahwanee Lodge in Yosemite. New facilities are also being constructed and opening for business, such as the Black Bear Inn near the Heavenly ski resort in California.
