Both foreign and US golfers were reluctant to play in the first Presidents Cup because they did not want to commit to an event that lacks the stature and tradition of the Ryder Cup. PGA officials took on the task of convincing players and produced a successful tournament.

Many golfers were under pressure during The Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Golf Classic, the last tournament of 1996. Taylor Smith was disqualified because his putter was illegal, and Brian Claar lost his card and had to go back to Qualifying School because of a poor round.
