Boatbuilders have used copper as a boat building material placed beneath the waterline to prevent teredo worms from boring into wooden hulls of boats. However, seawater can corrode copper. Aluminum has also been used to produce more corrosion-resistant outboard motors, engine blocks and hulls.

What causes "metal rot"?

Galvanic corrosion results from electrically connecting two different metals and immersing them in an electrolyte, thus creating some kind of a battery that produces voltage. This leads to the disappearance of the anodic metal. It is the most common corrosion in small seafaring vessels.
