The effects of team building on the adherence patterns of female exercise participants
Article Abstract:
The positive effects of a teambuilding intervention program were tested by assigning members of a fitness class to either a team-building or a control condition. Instructors in the former group were specially trained for the experiment while the control group instructors were uninformed about the study.Adherence patterns were measured using records of attendance, lateness, early departure and withdrawal. The Group Environment Questionnaire was used to evaluate class cohesiveness. Results indicated stronger adherence of participants and perception of more cohesiveness in the teambuilding program.

Group cohesion and adherence in exercise classes
Article Abstract:
Research on exercise programs shows that adherence to a regimen is linked to the amount that the individual identifies socially with the group and the task the group is performing. Dropout rates of 20% to 50% over six months is not uncommon. Absenteeism in the form of lateness and non-attendance was measured against task and group identification. The results indicate that the stronger the identification, the lower the absenteeism. The research sample included 171 women in 11 classes, and further research on men would be useful.
