The influence of biological maturation on fat and carbohydrate metabolism during exercise in males
Article Abstract:
Energy production for muscular work during exercise is provided by the metabolism of a mixture of fats and carbohydrates, while the relative contribution to total energy expenditure of each of these substrates is primarily dependent upon exercise intensity. Fat utilization during exercise tends to be greatest at low exercise intensities, but as the exercise intensity increases, there is a gradual decline in the relative use of fat accompanied by a gradual increase in the relative use of carbohydrate.

Effects of training status on the metabolic responses to high carbohydrate and high fat meals
Article Abstract:
This study examined the effect of aerobic status on resting metabolic rates in women. Although there were no significant differences between the groups after ingesting a high-fat meal, aerobically trained women displayed a greater metabolic response than the control group after eating a meal rich in carbohydrates.

Towards optimizing the timing of the pre-exercise meal
Article Abstract:
This article compares the exercise performance of women who ate a meal either three or six hours before a treadmill test. Results indicate that women who followed the three-hour prefeeding regimen had increased performance and better endurance when compared to those who ate six hours before exercising.
