Most muzzleloading enthusiasts prefer a caplock rifle, which is easier to use. The differences between in-line and sidehammer ignition, pyrodex and blackpowder, and roundballs and bullets are discussed, as are caliber sizes, cleaning and accessories.

Deerhunting using a muzzleloading rifle requires that the hunter be as close as possible to the target. Thus the hunter must be more patient and skillful than usual. Tips are given for using rattling antlers to attract deer.
