The shortcomings of the American Kennel Club's policy on dog breed pedigrees is discussed, including their use of field trials. Joan Bailey's book on the Griffon gun dog is an honest approach to that breed, detailing its history, shortcomings and reemergence as a worthy breed of hunting dog.

Pointing Labrador retrievers do not deserve the negative reputation that is put forth by some hunters and breeders. Two recent magazine articles that deplore the abilities of the dogs are criticized. A lack of understanding of the nature of the dogs contributes to the misconceptions.

Field trialers are responsible for the loss of retrieving ability in Labradors. They are selecting dogs for breeding on the basis of their ability to be trained rather than their ability to retrieve.
