One woman marathon runner who fell in the Bronx area while running in the 1991 New York City Marathon discovered unexpected compassion from people who deal with far worse crises daily. She finished the race in an emergency room but left feeling hopeful towards future races.

A son entered a 10-K race with his father. When he finished the race, he waited for his father who never made it to the finish line. He had collapsed before the third mile and died immediately. The son was left with memories and his father's runner's watch for a memento.
