Rivers from North Carolina to Michigan to northern California are usually at their lowest and clearest flows, and cooling weather brings increasing trout activity. Midget lures or small natural baits fished on superfine 2- or 4- pound-test monofilament line will let you sneak up on fish that those with heavier spinning gear-and even fly casters-either spook or can't reach.

The best place to start stream trout fishing is not always the head of the pool as usually advised. It becomes too crowded and overfished. The tails of pools are favored by wild trout and larger stocked fish.
