The creation of many trails has often been the work of just one person who was inspired to blaze a trail while out on a solitary hike. Five such people, Tim Ernst of Arkansas, Emily Gregor of Ohio, Ruth Ittner of Washington, Jim Kern of Florida and Bob Moss of New York are profiled.

Some trail signs and markers are notable because they seem to fit their surroundings in a unique way. Some signs are amusing, and some are absolutely wrong. Official signs and signs made by hikers in several areas are discussed.
