The Santa Barbara Channel can be intimidating because of its strong northwesterly winds that have given the channel its nickname 'Windy Lane.' The onslaught of these winds is signalled by tentacle-like cloud caps in Santa Cruz Island. A sailor and his wife successfully negotiate the channel.
