Veteran Kiwi sailor Graeme Kendall sailed out of Auckland, New Zealand, on 23 April 2005 and was scheduled to reach Greenland in August of that year through the icebound Northwest Passage. A description of Kendall's customized Elliott 12.5-meter boat, Astral Express, is presented, together with a discussion of the voyage undertaken to capture one of the last virgin sailing records.

The experience of cruising from Darwin in Australia to the Mediterranean through the Red Sea is discussed. Inspite of the political tension in Arabic countries due to the Iraq war, the Americans were always treated kindly.
