A cruiser recounts his chance meeting with a cruiser couple on the Epi Island while sailing from St. Maarten, in the Netherlands Antilles, through the Panama Canal across Pacific aboard the 21-foot Elsie Rose-a mini Transat racer converted to a cruiser. A good wind vane is cruiser's best friend but for the cruiser couple sailing aboard steel-hulled Bio, the vane became a symbol of love.

Tacking away from conventional wisdom

A veteran sailor described his experience regarding when drastic measures would be needed to shake free of a windless weather system that were slowing him down, he makes a conscious decision to jibe to a heading away from the destination. This and other bold moves that have disastrous lead him to take class honors on Leg One of the solo race around the world are also mentioned.

A Baja bonanza

The forecast was for light winds but the wind had built to 25 knots in Gulfo de California. It was hard to cross Mazatlan and Isla Isabela, but the sea stretched out and reaching Matanchan onboard Tranquilo to the smell of bananas was a pleasure.
