What is polluting our beaches?
Article Abstract:
Our beautiful beaches are increasingly contaminated by various pollutants that also affect the quality of the marine environment. Among the beach and beach water pollution sources are marine debris, oil and chemicals. Pollution contributed to almost 5,000 beach closures in 23 states in 1992-1993.

Article Abstract:
Beach pollution, in the form of marine debris and nutrient-based pollution, will get worse before it gets better. The US coastal population is growing quickly, but pollution control is not keeping pace. Each year more beaches close and more advisories are posted.

The most insidious beach pollutants are pathogens that are carried to beach waters or estuaries by wastewater effluent, sewage, sludge, or from storm drains. The pathogens are invisible are invisible and bring diseases such as hepatitis A and giardia.
