An increasing number of medical researchers are agreeing that the moderate use of wine may help reduce the risk of heart disease. There is also general agreement that the claim cannot be made for all forms of alcohol, but that the phenolic antioxidants in red wine, in particular, make it beneficial.

Should wine bottles and liquor labels be allowed to carry health claims?

Wine has been shown to protect some people from coronary disease, and those who favor including that information on wine labels believe it should be readily available. Those opposed point out that many people have had drinking problems, and that such information can only worsen the situation.

An evaluation of the health habits of residents of Lyons, France reveals that a distinct relationship between moderate wine intake and low rates of heart disease may exist. Other factors that may prevent heart disease are discussed.
