A question of rules
Article Abstract:
A new set of Common Rules have been drafted which shall establish a global standard, increased structural durability, longer asset life and eliminate competition on minimum structural scantlings and shall come into effect on 1st July, 2005. Development in technology, structure and design, necessitated the formation of the new rules. While the implementation of the new rules reduces design costs and manufacturing cost due to uniform designs for shipbuilders, increased initial steel weight, means higher initial costs for ship owners.
