Finland's finest to cruise the Caribbean

Royal Carribbean Cruise Line has launched the 'Grandeur of the Seas' cruise ship constructed by Kvaerner Masa at its Helsinki, Finland, yard. The $300-million boat, which has a capacity for 2,400 passengers, is the latest Vision Class ship for the leisure cruises operator. The Vision Class vessel incorporates 11 passenger decks and several public rooms, such as the spacious Great Gatsby dining hall. Powered by four 12V48/60 MAN B&W main engines and two Kamewa propellers, the ship can attain a cruising speed of 22 knots.

The need for speed

Issues concerning the development of faster cruise ships are discussed. The design of Royal Olympic Voyager and its sister ship by Blohm and Voss is examined, and the commercial imperatives for greater speeds which allow more destinations, are explored.
