Mixed fortunes prevail
Article Abstract:
The US shipbuilding industry received the sum of $2.89 billion in new commercial shipbuilding orders for 1998, primarily through Title XI guarantees under the National Shipbuilding and Shipyard Conversion Act of 1993. The availability of such loan guaranty programs has managed to revitalize the nation's shipbuilding industry, which is primarily dependent on orders from the US Navy. However, the slight improvement is still a long way from the industry's target of 10% of the world's orderbook.

Greek yards need cash
Article Abstract:
Financial prospects for two state owned Greek shipyards, Hellenic and Elefsis, are not so bright. Hellenic has only two commercial ships in for repair in its large repair yard. However, Hellenic's general manager believes that the low business level is only temporary. Elefsis, for its part, is still hoping that its planned privatization will push through. In contrast to the two, a private shipyard Neorion is doing relatively well.
