Gas turbine manufacturers continue to develop new products, including Rolls Royce's development of the recuperated WR21, funded by the US Navy. The turbine has been aimed at military operations, but could be used in cruise ships.

Brissonneau and Lotz Marine has upgraded its existing line of Compacwinch deck machinery. The new products features new positioning of the motor, gearbox, and switchgear inside the drum's barrel, making it more lightweight and easier to access. Both split and twin drum versions of the new models are available in 12, 16, 20, and 25 tonne ratings with drive supplied by a 3-speed pole charging motor. The new models have proven to be easier and less costly to install, with as much as 7% reductions off the purchase price.
