Painful progress towards profitability
Article Abstract:
Increased competition in the global shipbuilding market, coupled with the reduction in subsidies, has adversely affected Astilleros Espanoles S.A.'s financial performance. In FY 1994, the company lost $714 million and is expected to lose $317 million in FY 1995. To revitalize itself, the company has appointed a non-shipbuilding personality, Antonio Mendoza, as its chairman. In addition, it has forged an agreement with unions calling for a reduction in workforce from 10,500 to 6,200 and a 35% increase in productivity.
