Shore monitoring improves marine safety
Article Abstract:
The shipping industry has begun to adopt vessel traffic systems (VTS) to control ship movements and provide maximum ship surveillance in ports and in restricted sea areas. VTS integrates radio, radar, satellite navigation and computer processing systems to access information from a remote station. The system is expected to tighten competition in the shipping industry, as turnaround times become faster, port availability increases, sailing schedules become more flexible and port operating costs are reduced.
