Article Abstract:

Sythetic surfaces develop in response to technological advances and specification demands. Technical development has largely affected sand-filled turfs. Innovations include the use of heavier and coated fibres to reduce wear and friction burns and use of coarser graded sand to reduce packing. Since 1990 the International Amateur Athletics Assocation, the New Winterbottom Report, the Sports Council and Hockey Association have produced new specifications for synthetic surfaces. British Standard 7044 Part four covers multi-sports use.

Tenpin bowling operators aim to provide family entertainment backed up by catering facilities and additional attractions. Licensed bars, pool rooms, computer and video games are common. Some operators have a facility for computerised scoring. Equipment suppliers are emphasising compact coin-operated systems with computerised pinsetting and scoring facilities.
