Brussels' big names are offering deals to woo weekend business

Top hotels in Brussels are trying to attract more business during off-peak periods by reducing the prices of rooms and services. Hotel managers report low occupancy during weekends and low-season months. The Royal Windsor hotel has reduced its off-peak conference prices, including accommodations, meals and sports and conference facilities by 40%. The Conrad hotel also has lowered charges for conference visitors.

Tight German budgets spark boom in chains

A number of German hotel chains are launching budget hotel brands in order to fight against difficult market conditions. Etap Hotels, subsidiary of Accor, now has 31 hotels in Germany, and saw average occupancy rise 5% in 1995 from 1994 to 66%. It is now looking to open a further 16 hotels, focusing on edge-of-city locations. Steigenberger Hotels is soon to announce plans for a third two-star Esprix outlet.
