Eric Jacquemyn, the director of Belgium's first science centre Technopolis, says that his main goals for the centre are to improve customer service and maintain visitor numbers. The centre, which opens in February 2000, has seven highly contextualized zones, including the ActionReaction Zone, the Invisible Zone and the House Zone. Funding for the centre will be covered by grants from the government of Flanders, the Province of Antwerp and eight financial partners.

David Hudd took on Vardon PLC with Nick Irens in 1992 and developed it into a multi-faceted leisure business worth 160 million pounds sterling and employing 2,600 people. Vardon's business includes the successful Sea Life centres, The London Dungeon visitor attraction, ten holiday parks, 18 bingo clubs and, most recently, a range of health and fitness centres. Hudd forecasts Vardon's continuing growth through the purchase of local authority leisure centres, visitor attraction expansion and the addition of three bingo clubs per year.

UK theme park operators are planning new attractions for 1998 and beyond. Richard Pawley of Drayton Manor Park believes that theme parks face growing challenges from retail as well as other leisure providers. Robert Montgomery of Legoland is planning a significant new attraction for the beginning of the 1998 season, and Alan Randall, head of marketing at Thorpe Park plans to continue developing family brands. Blackpool Pleasure Beach is aiming to build on the success of Playstation - The Ride.
