The International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) has recently launched reference material giving details of how to plan, build, equip and maintain athletics facilities. It has given formal approval to several laboratories which specialise in testing synthetic surfaces, and has introduced an accreditation scheme which will be operated by the International Association for Sports Surfaces Sciences (ISSS). Leisure industry operators should be aware that an athletics track represents a large investment, so any project of this kind must be undertaken with high levels of supervision and testing.

Activities, site and location are fundamental considerations in planning synthetic turf pitches. Construction methods will determine cost. Accurate estimates are essential as pitches cost at least 200,000 pounds sterling and cost cutting will compromise the end product. Basic construction comprises layers of base, underlay or shockpad and synthetic turf. Engineered bases are preferable to dynamic bases where smoothness is a priority. Rubber crumb underlay is currently favoured for the underlay. Sythetic turf is available as conventional woven carpet or cheaper tufted sand-filled turf.

Article Abstract:
Technological advances in synthetic surfaces and footwear can result in unfair advantages for some athletes. The technology exists to produce a synthetic surface which favours no particular athlete or event. The International Amateur Athletics Association (IAAF) has produced complete guidelines for surface requirements to ensure that all athletes have an equal chance to compete at the highest level without extra risk of injury.
