Vital statistics
Article Abstract:
Over 13.4 million people visited UK theme parks during 1997, spending an average of 17.18 pounds sterling per person. About 2.8 million people visited Alton Towers, making it the most popular attraction in the UK, followed by Chessington World of Adventures with 1.75 million visitors. The theme park industry is seeking to improve the perception that they offer value for money to consumers, who often regard visiting a theme park as an expensive family outing. Many visitors prefer to take their own refreshments, as buying on site is too expensive. The UK theme park industry is expected to reach 337 million pounds sterling by the year 2002.

Plan about town
Article Abstract:
Delegates at the IBC/Leisure Management conference in London, UK, debated the practical and legislative issues surrounding the government's latest planning guidance entitled Town Centres and Retail Developments (PPG 6, 6.96). Planning applications for out-of-town sites must be considered inappropriate for town centre, edge-of-centre and out-of-centre sites before permission is granted. Local government endeavours to support town centre trading at day and night. Town centre sites provide better value for money than those out-of-town.

Vital statistics
Article Abstract:
Many health and fitness clubs have seen a rise in turnover over the last year, and very few expect profits to fall over the next 12 months, according to a survey by the Fitness Industry Association and Fleury Manico Leisure Surveyors. More than half of the clubs surveyed have development plans, and this is likely to boost employment in the industry. There are around 2,500 private clubs in the UK, employing around 20,000 full-time staff.
