Wining and dining
Article Abstract:
The UK's eating out market has significantly expanded but even so continues to trail the US and the rest of Europe. A survey from Mintel shows that 87% of adults in the UK visit restaurants for dinner, up 11% from 1989. In terms of usage, young adults are eating out most frequently, while consumers in southern England and London eat out more often than the remainder of the UK. The UK's eating out market was worth over 20 billion pounds sterling in 1999. It is predicted that 98% of adults will be using restaurants by 2009.

Making a meal of it: make an occasion of your leisure offer by wining and dining visitors
Article Abstract:
Events to be held outside a leisure site's normal trading hours require skilled management, but there are companies that provide such services, such as Town and County, part of Gardner Merchant, Payne and Gunter, Admirable Crichton and London Catering Services. Ideal venues are sports stadia and racecourses, and catering companies already have the necessary infrastructure and finance available to organize larger events. Sponsorship is important to a successful event, as well as media link-ups.

The young ones
Article Abstract:
New research from market researcher Mintel on eating out places for children shows that the over 10s are often overlooked by caterers who tend to focus on younger children and their families. Operators have to face the challenge of the 10-to-15 age group who have diverse tastes but seek value for money. Burger restaurants have the most appeal to the under 16s, because they are fast and inexpensive.
