Nigerian writer Ken Saro-Wiwa has been chosen as the recipient of Conde Nast Traveler's seventh annual Environmental Award. He was arrested and subsequently executed in 1995 by the Nigerian military government on murder charges, but many believe that he was killed for political reasons.

Javier Villavicencio is the winner of the Conde Nast Traveler Environmental Award for the year 2003. He helped stop the government and the Mitsubishi Corporation from building the world's largest industrial salt-harvesting facility in Baja California region of Mexico.

The savior of Sarawak: Jok Jau Evong is a Renaissance man in the Malaysian rain forest

Conde Nast Traveler's ninth annual Environmental Award was given to Jok Jau Evong, a Kayan village leader in Sarawak, Malaysia. Evong was responsible for stopping illegal logging in the rain forests of the region as well as palm oil cultivation.
