In 1980, the US Dept. of Defense decided to adopt the 9x19 mm pistol cartridge as the standard for the country's armed forces. In 1985, the Beretta Model 92SB-F, or the M9, was selected as standard service pistol for US servicemen. The commercial Model 92SB is available for civilians.
