Archaeological frankincense
Article Abstract:
Frankincense from the archeological record at the site of the major frontier settlement of Qasr Ibrim, Egyptian Nubia, has been chemically characterized. A combination of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to characterize the resins, and solvent-soluble fractions showed the presence of pentacyclic triterpenoid components, seen in modern frankincense resin.
